Urban Cuisine done right at Urbanlogi

Heading into the Joburg CBD can seem daunting to most people, but for the dishes served up at Urbanologi on Fox Street in Ferreirasdorp… well, we’d go just about anywhere. Hello Joburgers, if you haven’t popped into this spot yet, then gosh, have you been missing out.

Situated inside the Mad Giant Brewery, Urbanologi is all sorts of funky! With wide open spaces and fun Meccano inspired furniture, this place is industrial chic at its best. Decked out in red and grey, with what looks like giant cogs used as chandeliers, the restaurant fits right into the 1 Fox venue.

Not only are the staff incredibly friendly, but they know exactly what’s potting when it comes to the menu, which serves Urban Garde Cuisine. In fact, our very attentive waiter Adrian recommended the dishes we already had our heart set on – and they did not disappoint.

The dishes are tapas inspired, so sharing is key – which works well because the portions are so generous! The menu is divided into categories; Raw, Fried, Kushiyaki, Steamed, Cured and Frozen. We highly recommend you order a plate from each one. We started with the Deep-Fried Potatoes with a seaweed emulsion, which will shock your taste buds.

The wedges are perfectly crisp and seasoned, while the emulsion is creamy and full of flavor, with a slight smoky aftertaste. We had to stop ourselves from scooping it out with our fingers.

A definite must-try is the Venison Carpaccio; served with miso salt, baby spinach and crispy leeks, the meat is sensationally soft, and those crisp leeks add an exciting texture that the dish needs. We recommend you spread that miso salt onto every piece of carpaccio, because it heightens the entire dish.

Next up, the Crispy Dropped Black Pepper Pork Belly, served with a tamarind dressing, butternut puree, cucumber and a smoked peanut crumb. The dressing packs quite a punch, but the combination of the peanut, pork and butternut flavours are an absolute delight – and the cucumber is a refreshing break from the powerful dressing.

Our dish of the day had to be the picture perfect Crumbed Line Caught Chokka. It’s served with kimchi, burnt lime and a garlic emulsion, but it’s the burnt lime that we couldn’t get enough of. It’s the most unexpected flavor… so powerful, so punchy – it knocks your socks right off. You’ve got to try this one at least once!

If you’re looking for an out-of-this-world dining experience, then this is the place to go. Bring your friends and family, spread the word – because this place is the bee’s knees in our opinion.
