Our Poison of The Month – Uitkyk Brandy
If you’re going to drink brandy, you’ve got to do it right. Forget the brandy and cokes – we’ve found you a new favourite…Uitkyk 10-Year-Old Grand Reserve Brandy
How it’s made:
The brandy is distilled, matured and bottled on the idyllic and historic Stellenbosch Wine Estate. It’s made from the finest selection of Chenin Blanc, Cinsaut and Clairette Blanche grapes.
The base wine is double distilled in batches, using 1800 litre Savalle potstills imported from France in the late 1940s. The smaller pots and double distillation contributes to a rich, flawless and flavourful spirit.
The spirit from each cultivar was matured separately, first for 10 months in new Limousin French Oak barrels before spending the remaining 10 year period in third-fill Limousin French Oak. The final blend had an eight months marrying period before bottling, resulting in an elegant, soft and well-balanced brandy.
On the palate it displays a potpourri of flavours including fruit, vanilla, cloves and other spices.
Some years, a Cabernet Sauvignon is added to the blend.

In a tall tumble glass, combine 35ml of Uitkyk 10-Year-Old Grand Reserve Brandy with 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura Bitters over ice. Top up with ginger ale, garnish with a twist of lemon peel and serve.
